George M. Malis is a shareholder of Abbott Nicholson where he is a member of the Corporate, Tax/Pension, and Estate Planning practice groups. Mr. Malis has been engaged in the private practice of law for over 25 years, and concentrates his practice on tax and business planning for individuals and entities such as corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, and tax exempt organizations, along with the unique business issues that regulate the practice of medicine.
In his practice, Mr. Malis has a working knowledge of income, estate and gift tax strategies and specializes in sophisticated estate planning techniques. In addition, Mr. Malis has assisted business owners and professionals in the planning of their business entities by helping them form and structure their entity, as well as assisting them in the acquisition of an entity, its day-to-day operations, and the disposition of the entity. Mr. Malis can assist business owners in structuring their existing organization and assist them in the transition of their organization to the next generation of business owners.
Also, from a business perspective, the practice of medicine has become increasingly complex. Mr. Malis has counseled numerous medical practices on issues related to "fraud and abuse" (the Stark laws) and HIPAA compliance issues. Mr. Malis has negotiated numerous agreements between health care professionals and organizations. For example, Mr. Malis was instrumental in representing a large private practice in the formation of, as well as the continued operation of, a major cancer center in the Detroit Metropolitan area.
Mr. Malis earned his J.D. (cum laude) from the Detroit College of law in 1981, and received his L.L.M. (Masters of Tax Law) from Wayne State University Law School in 1990.
Mr. Malis holds an "AV" rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating awarded attorneys by their peers.
